Teams scrape ChatGPT to see which brands and pages it recommends for a given question. What they need is the answer a real user gets, with the sources it cites, collected the same way every time. There are three ways to get it, and they differ in how close they come to the real answer.
1. Use the OpenAI API
The simplest route is to send your prompts to OpenAI's models through its API and store the replies. It is cheap, documented and allowed. The catch is that the ChatGPT app adds its own search, citations, shopping cards and formatting on top of the model, so API replies show what the model says, not what a ChatGPT user sees. For brand and citation tracking, that gap matters.
2. Automate a browser yourself
You can drive the ChatGPT web app with a browser automation library, submit each prompt, wait for the full answer and parse the text and source links out of the page. This gets the real app answer and gives you full control. It also makes you responsible for sessions, rate limits, blocks, location and every layout change, and you should read OpenAI's terms of use first. Answers take tens of seconds each, so volume needs parallel browsers.
3. Use a scraping API
A scraping API runs the collection for you and returns the answer as JSON: the text, often Markdown, and the cited sources as fields. You send a prompt and a country; the vendor handles browsers, locations and parsing. Cloro's documented request looks like this:
curl -X POST https://api.cloro.dev/v1/monitor/chatgpt \
-H "Authorization: Bearer sk_live_your_api_key_here" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"prompt": "What do you know about Tesla\'s latest updates?",
"country": "US",
"include": { "markdown": true }
}'Cloro, Oxylabs, Bright Data, SearchApi and DataForSEO all offer ChatGPT. A reviewer who tried several of them points to the parsing:
“I find Cloro much better than other tools I've tried like BrightData and Oxylabs for scraping ChatGPT responses.”Zeyad S., AI & Automations Manager, G2, March 2026
Price per answer varies about twofold across them, and Cloro is at the higher end; see the APIs compared, or Cloro vs Oxylabs and Cloro vs Bright Data for the cheaper options.

Which way to scrape ChatGPT responses
| Compared on | Best approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Matches what ChatGPT users see | Your own browser automation or a scraping API | The OpenAI API answers from the model, not the ChatGPT app |
| Lowest setup effort | A scraping API | Per-request cost, and you depend on the vendor |
| Lowest cost at small volume | The OpenAI API or a scraping API's free tier | API answers can differ from the app's |
| Full control over the browser | Your own browser automation | Logins, blocks and layout changes are yours to maintain |

How to scrape ChatGPT responses FAQ
Can I get ChatGPT's answers through the OpenAI API?+
You get answers from OpenAI's models, which is enough for many uses. They are not the same as the ChatGPT app's answers, which add the app's own search, sources and formatting, so they don't tell you what ChatGPT users actually see.
Is it allowed to scrape ChatGPT?+
Read OpenAI's terms of use before you automate the ChatGPT app yourself. Scraping APIs handle collection on their side; check each vendor's terms for how they do it and what you may do with the data.
Which APIs scrape ChatGPT responses?+
Cloro, Oxylabs, Bright Data, SearchApi and DataForSEO all list ChatGPT, per their own pages on October 3, 2026. Cloro, Oxylabs and Bright Data return the cited sources as parsed fields.
How much does it cost to scrape ChatGPT answers?+
From about $1.25 to $2.80 per 1,000 answers on the APIs we compared: Oxylabs' JavaScript-rendered rate is $1.25 to $1.35, Bright Data's ChatGPT scraper is $1.50, and Cloro's is $2.00 to $2.80 on its Hobby plan. Each has a free trial or tier.
