Buyers now ask ChatGPT and Perplexity which product to pick, and those answers name a few brands and cite a few pages. You can check where you stand with nothing more than a prompt list and a spreadsheet. This page covers the method and when it stops being worth doing by hand.
Track AI brand mentions by hand in five steps
Write the prompts your buyers ask
List 20 to 50 questions a buyer types before choosing a product like yours: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "is X worth it", "alternatives to Y". Use their words, not your keywords. This list is the thing you track, so keep it fixed from week to week.
Pick the engines and a location
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode answer the same question differently. Choose the ones your buyers use. Answers also change by country, so run every check from the same location.
Run each prompt in a clean session
Log out or use a private window, so memory and past chats don't shape the answer. Run each prompt two or three times: the same question can name different brands on different runs.
Record the same fields every time
In a spreadsheet, log the date, engine, prompt, whether your brand is named, its position in the answer, the competitors named, and every source URL the answer cites. The cited URLs show which pages you need to appear on.
Repeat on a schedule and compare
Rerun the full list weekly or monthly. Your mention rate is the share of answers that name you; compare it with each competitor's rate across the same prompts.
Where the manual method breaks
The arithmetic grows fast. Fifty prompts across five engines, run three times each, is 750 answers per check, each one copied into a sheet with its citations. Done weekly, that takes hours, and the answers still drift between runs.
At that volume an API saves the time. It runs the prompts on a schedule and returns each answer, the brands in it and the cited URLs as structured data you can load straight into a sheet or dashboard.

How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT FAQ
Can I check ChatGPT brand mentions for free?+
Yes. Running a fixed prompt list by hand in logged-out sessions and logging the answers costs nothing but time. It stops scaling once you track dozens of prompts across several engines.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?+
The answers are generated fresh each time, and they vary with location, memory and the sources the engine retrieves. That's why each prompt should be run more than once and from the same location.
Which tools automate AI answer tracking?+
APIs such as Cloro, SearchApi, Bright Data and DataForSEO return AI answers as data. Cloro covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overview in one format; DataForSEO also covers Claude.
How many answers does Cloro's free tier cover?+
Its 500 free monthly credits cover roughly 70 to 100 ChatGPT answers (5 to 7 credits each, async) or about 160 Google searches, per its pricing page on October 3, 2026.
